What is a cobot?

BotsMarket editorial team · Our verification method

A cobot is a robot designed with features that can support collaborative applications, but the word “collaborative” does not make every installation automatically safe around people.

What cobots are used for

Common applications include machine tending, palletizing, screwdriving, inspection, dispensing, welding and material handling. The robot arm is only one part of the application.

  • End effector or gripper
  • Fixtures and product presentation
  • Vision or sensing
  • Safety functions and risk controls
  • PLC, machine and production-system integration

Payload and reach are starting points

Payload must include the tool and workpiece, not just the product. Reach must be checked across the full motion path, including approach angles and pallet or machine geometry.

Collaborative use still needs risk assessment

The final application determines whether people can safely share space with the robot and under what operating modes. Tooling, speed, sharp edges, trapping points and carried objects all matter.

Compare the complete cell

When pricing systems, compare engineering, tooling, safety, installation, programming, commissioning, training and support—not only the arm price.
